Summary: Gabriel's dead and Michael isn't too happy about that.
The Grace of the Archangel Gabriel, of Loki hung heavily in the air still a night after the slaughter as Kali made her way down the halls. She gathered up magic and grace together and put it into a large beaker as she wandered the room before going to the basement. She knew what she must do with the other Gods dead…she had to create a new one.
She created an alter and then took the blood of Dean Winchester out from her skirt. He was the Righteous Man, the normal one of the brothers and he had been the one that had shown even more character than most of the other Gods… She shook the magic and amplified it by about five times and then mixed the raw grace in with it and the purplish light became a light green, about the color of Dean’s eyes. Kali smiled. The magic had spoken. She mixed it and the blood together and whispered the words of creation and of magic and the two fused together. It became a powder that she would need to make the Winchester breathe in to start the process… She capped the vial and laughed softly. She wondered just what type of God Dean would make even as she vanished and appeared, invisible and quiet in a hotel room the boys were in. She uncapped it and the powder moved on it’s own, seeking out it’s target. It went into Dean’s mouth and nostrils and the human started coughing, his body trying to reject it, but the powder had already become a hum of energy as Kali chanted softly and activated it and the combination of magic and grace curled up around Dean’s soul where it was soaked in like water with parched soil…
Kali smiled as Dean groaned in his sleep as his soul started to change, and his body started to change with it. The process would be done within five months, maybe less with the stray grace in there… now all she had to do was place a compulsion on all the people Dean Winchester has ever saved, get them praying to him… And with that Kali left, wondering just what kind of God Dean would be…
--
“Dean you seriously don’t look too good…” Sam was saying a week after they had cut Pestilence’s finger off with the ring. Dean just shook his head at his brother. He didn’t want Bobby getting involved in this…He didn’t expect Crowley to though…
“Ah..Dean you look positively fucked,” Crowley chuckled as he shoved a newspaper into the oldest Winchester’s hands. Dean fumbled with it for a moment and looked over the header of the paper before handing it to Sam. Fuck his head was pounding too hard for him to focus right now.
He…He kept hearing voices, always around night… They were somewhat clear, they were…prayers? He didn’t know but he was trying to shut himself off to them even as his back itched annoyingly… Sam kept pestering him but he glared at his brother, who would shut up and he eventually learned not to bring up how tired Dean was nowadays, no…not tired, just…drained of energy.
He needed…something he wasn’t sure what, but his insides felt like they were churning long before the point where he got the tar beaten out of him by Lucifer in Sam’s body…and when Sam went into the pit and the explosion after…He saw Castiel, who healed him and then paused and frowned at him. Yet he didn’t say a word as Dean stumbled to the impala and then drove through the day and night until he came upon an abandoned manor, where he shrugged and parked his car in the garage and he groaned and sprawled out in the back of the car. His eyes were closed tightly and he felt like he was going to burst when he got up and stumbled out of the car and over into the house. He didn’t want to hurt his baby, his impala…
He got to the front room when he finally couldn’t take it anymore!
He didn’t notice Kali sitting on a couch, nor did he notice as Kali said something… That something triggered the power hiding inside Dean to consume him…It had been four months.
When he next woke, he was sprawled out on a bed and there was two somewhat large somethings coming from his shoulder blades… He looked back and saw wings the color of his eyes spreading out and Dean froze. He then looked around and heard a soft laugh and he looked to where Kali sat on the couch in the master bedroom of the manor.
“Welcome to the land of the living Dean Winchester,” She said calmly as Dean blinked at her.
“Did…did you give me wings?” He asked and Kali’s eyes had a bright gleam to them.
“I did nothing but give you…the power of many Gods and a sliver of an archangel’s grace. I need more Gods here since you saw what happened to quite a few of them at the hotel. I believe it is…Gabriel’s piece of Grace that decided to give you wings…” She said calmly as Dean sat up, the wings flapping and Dean looked irritated as Kali smiled and stood up.
“I…I can’t…” Dean said as Kali came to the bed and she eyed him.
“You can Dean; even for a human you were very powerful. I want to see what you’ll end up being a God of what your overwhelming traits are that will define you…” Kali says, uncharacteristically…nice.
Dean looks away for a long moment then sighs and looks to Kali. He had no-one else he could really depend on but himself now.
“So…what do I do then?” He says and that gets a smile out of Kali…
--
Kali spends the next few months teaching Dean how to use his new abilities. They had figured out what he would preside over after tests Kali put him through and both seemed to think that it fit. Travelling and Protection. Two things that came naturally to the hunter. The one thing they couldn’t figure out was how to hide his wings; though Dean figured out he could fly with them as easily as he could teleport with the magic.
“Mmm. They should be praying to you about now,” Kali said as she smirked and Dean was bombarded by prayers from people he knew and it was general ones, that he stay safe and that he doesn’t get harmed on the hunts they know he does. He looked to Kali and laughed.
“You placed a compulsion on them didn’t you?” He asked with a soft chuckle and Kali just smiled.
“Yes, but now is your part, you need to let yourself be known, in however small a way. I honestly say to continue your hunts and continue to save people. After all, it’s protecting them Dean and you would be traveling. Two things you’re good at,” She pointed out and Dean nodded and looked around for a long moment, he’d adjusted his clothes for his wings but now he needed something to cover them…He thought of Cas’ trench coat and smirked as one appeared on him and he made special spots in it where he could rest the wings as Kali pet his head.
“Well off with you Winchester and your precious Impala is still downstairs,” She said with a smile before leaving. Dean smiled and stretched. Four months. That’s how long they’d been in this mansion which had been Dean’s practice for conjuring things and for practicing teleporting and flying in the backyard. Dean shifted and looked at the black trench coat for a moment and shifted his wings so they were comfortable and he went to the impala and sat in the seat. It felt different with his wings, but he changed the seat a bit and now it was comfortable as he took in a deep breath and left the mansion that had become home. He’d come back to it sometime soon…
He then quietly went on the road and he found himself annoyed with how…slow it was… Not to mention he could sense something…something he knew about for about two months now… He brought the impala to Bobby’s and he knocked on the door. Bobby came to it and blinked at Dean who offered a small smile and then pressed the keys into Bobby’s hands.
“Take care of her Bobby…” He whispered and Bobby narrowed his eyes at him.
“You made a deal didn’t you?” He asked and Dean let out a huff, his wings shifting slightly.
“No, I didn’t. You know I didn’t. If anything because Sam is back,” He said calmly and he saw Bobby blink and step back.
“How long have you known?” Bobby asked and Dean just shrugged for a moment.
“I know he’s here, the black dodge charger and all…” He said as Bobby just blinked at him even as Sam came into view and looked at Dean, who when he thought about it, Dean was pretty sure he was pale, having mostly been in the mansion the whole few months. He could also tell something was wrong with Sam, something that tugged at his power.
“Bye Bobby,” He said after a long moment and he went down the steps.
“Dean!” Bobby yelled after him even as Dean kept walking and he ignored Bobby as he then heard footsteps and it was Sam and anger rolled through him as Sam got closer and he didn’t know why he felt so angry. But he sped up and left the Salvage yard and it’s wards and then sprinted and he willed himself gone the moment he was out of sight of Sam and then he was gone.
--
He wandered around for the next few months. He saved people, hunted things…family business, but while he did he protected families from monsters, quietly warding their homes from every sort of monster. He didn’t want what happened to his mother happening to them. That and if they ever needed protection from anything, he’d know… He spent more time in the sun and he still hadn’t figured out how to hide his wings save for with the trench coat.
He couldn’t shake the feeling that eventually he’d become the hunted. After all he killed a few people that tried to harm the people he was protecting, that were under his protection and the family didn’t even know about it.
In fact one family he ended up protecting no matter what was Lisa and Ben. Djins had tried to come after them but Dean had killed them outright, he was pretty sure his brother had seen him, but he’d left before Sam could come close. He still got that rage when he was around his brother, and it was all from the strange vibe he got off of him… It made Dean uneasy…scared.
A month after that, Dean sat in a bar drinking quietly, watching the patrons there even as he drank. He saw a few women that were looking at him, but he couldn’t…wouldn’t. Not anymore…Not again, not at least until he could figure out how to hide the wings.
He was in town doing what he did, protecting families. Again he’d killed intruders into the houses that had intent to kill them and he’d tossed their bodies off somewhere. He didn’t care if anyone knew. Every victim had his mark on them when he killed them; he always marked them as a signature… He couldn’t come up with a new name for himself, couldn’t stand it. He’d always be Dean Winchester. So he, as a twist of irony, would always leave a burned handprint on the victim’s right shoulder. A testament to when Castiel had brought him back from hell. He refused any sort of sacrifice that had to do with killing anyone or anything. He didn’t want anything killed for him…
So here he sat, drinking his scotch when he felt it…felt something…else come into the bar with another something that turned out to be Sam. He didn’t move though. He just kept drinking as he ordered another round of drinks.
“I don’t understand it Cas…this thing…it’s been all over the country and just now we’re catching up?” Sam asked and Cas was silent.
“The mark it leaves…reminds me of Dean in a way…of the mark I left on his shoulder when I pulled him from Perdition…” Cas’ voice was low and almost hesitant, “Still…this creature doing this doesn’t seem to be taking souls.” Castiel said calmly and Dean smirked slightly to himself.
“Yeah…but it’s killing humans! We have to kill it!” Sam growled, his voice low and dangerous. A sigh…
“So you say, but of course you wouldn’t understand what’s here what…was around those homes. Sam they were protected against everything but angels and humans. Someone protected the homes and when something crossed it, this creature killed them,” Castiel said calmly even as Dean finished his drink and paid the barkeep and then left, he felt eyes on him but he didn’t say anything as he disappeared the moment he left and reappeared at the most recent victim’s house. Around children and children only did he show his wings. They were innocent and needed something to believe in, to know was protecting them…
This child, a five year old had nearly been killed by the most recent intruder… Dean had killed the man, but only after he dragged him away from the child. He’d put his hand to the man’s shoulder and hand made his heart explode. Dean was never messy with the deaths, remembering the annoyances with cleaning them up. The man’s death had been quick and when Dean had gone back into the room it was to flex his hand a bit and he saw the little girl, Melanie was her name, whimpering and Dean took off his trench coat and showed her his wings and the little girl had let him close. He had picked her up and taken her to her bed and sat down with her, let his wings wrap around her as he told her that the bad man had been taken care of. He’d dumped the body on the sidewalk outside the house later, keeping the mask on the man to show he’d been attempting something horrible…
The girl had asked him what his name was.
“I’m Dean,” He said softly as the girl sobbed and he patted her back.
“You an angel? You have wings,” She said softly and Dean had smiled at her.
“Yes…in a way I am. I’m here to keep you safe, but I can’t be here all the time, I have other people to protect from the bad guys too you know,” He said softly.
“Will you stay with me, Dean?” She asked and Dean had nodded. He was glad he could help her and he tucked her in and stayed by her side. His heart was warm with something close to love…but then again he had a sort of love for all the families he protected, whether they knew about him or not.
“If you ever are in trouble, think my name and ask for help, okay? I’ll come as soon as I can alright?” And Melanie had nodded before she fell asleep…
Here Dean was again now, sitting by her bed as she slept, wearing his trenchcoat with the hood up as he watched her for a long moment. He felt a tug on his power and looked up. He saw a person he’d never thought he’d see again standing there. The original protector of children and families and mothers…He could see the glow of grace coming off of him.
“Hello, Gabriel,” He said calmly and quietly as the archangel rose a brow as Dean brought the hood down. The shock on the archangel’s face was priceless and Dean grinned as he conjured up a Camera and took a picture of said shock.
“Well crap,” Gabriel growled as he ran his hand through his hair. Dean got up and tilted his head at the archangel.
“What, what is it?” He asked as Gabriel looked at him apologetically.
“Change your…look, please. I’m pretty sure where I’m taking you next you wouldn’t want them seeing your face…” Gabriel sounded empty right now, and shocked and…sad. He figured he knew why.
“You told them you’d track me down, didn’t you? Or at least what they think is a…monster…” He said at long last and Gabriel nodded.
“I told them that the victims were all killed because they’d threatened a family, but they still want to kill you…or at least talk to you…but Sam…” Gabriel just shook his head.
“I have a better idea…” Dean muttered and the air shimmered for a moment and a near duplicate of Dean appeared and Gabriel raised his brow in some amusement.
“I see Kali taught you quite a bit,” Gabriel said with appreciation for Dean’s handiwork clear in his voice.
Dean had given his image a cloak and a hood and hazel colored clothes under it.
“Well…not…everything…She ah…slipped some of your grace in with whatever she did to me and I haven’t been able to figure out how to…hide these...” And he shed the trench coat and stretched out the wings.
“Damn…she really was desperate…” Gabriel said with a low whistle and he went over to the wings and chuckled as he inspected them, running fingertips over the arc of the wings and feathers with a light touch that sent shivers down Dean’s spine and through his body...
“My grace caused this that much is clear…Mmm. I can teach you how to hide them, but after we go to Sam, how does that sound?” Gabriel asked and Dean nodded.
“I…don’t know if a stake would actually kill me so can you ah…let me just watch while I talk through that?” He asked, nodding toward the image and Dean watched Gabriel nod as Dean put the coat back on. He cloaked himself in his invisibility, only allowing Gabriel to see him and the archangel seemed somewhat surprised at that, but he snapped his fingers and now they were in an abandoned home, Dean made the solid image snarl and fight against Gabriel as Dean went to a corner quietly.
“Let go of me you fucking, dick!” The image snarled, it’s voice Dean’s…
“Quiet!” Gabriel snapped at the image which only snarled and struggled harder as Gabriel threw him into a circle. Castiel and Sam were there, eyes on the image that glared at them, Gabriel pulling the hood off of it. Dean’s face was revealed and his image looked pissed.
“What am I doing here?” The image snarled angrily at the three watching it, “I have done NOTHING wrong and yet you sick a damn archangel on me!”
“You call killing innocent people nothing wrong? As well as taking the look of my brother?” Sam said, eyes hard and flinted.
“They were not innocent! They were threatening the people I protect!” The image spat out angrily, Dean saw Sam laugh humorlessly.
“And who calls that protection? You’re just looking for excuses to kill people!” Sam said and Dean wasn’t sure why he said what he did next.
“At least I do it because I can feel emotions unlike you, you soulless bastard!” The words had hit home with Sam, he faltered a bit and then it hit Dean, Sam really was missing his soul! His image started laughing.
“So that’s it! You can’t feel anything so you kill as many Supernatural creatures you can! You don’t care if they’re doing anything good or not!” The image just laughed and shook it’s head,
“You’re worse than me.” That’s when Sam lunged at the image with a stake, the image dodging out of the way, not making a move to hurt Sam.
“You know what’s funny? You call me a murderer but I only kill in extreme cases. Want to know what my domain is? Traveling and Protection, a lot like your angel pal there,” He said as he jerked his thumb at Gabriel, who blinked and the image dodged another attack from Sam, at least at first.
“You’re a new God…You’ll soon be dust,” Sam snarled, Castiel and Gabriel exchanged looks as they watched Sam face off against the image.
“Yeah, I am new and actually, I think I’d be one hell of a lightshow-“ The image said even as it was stabbed through the chest, it’s eyes widening.
“S-Sammy…” It whispered and Sam’s eyes widened and then narrowed.
“Don’t you dare toy with me!” He yelled even as he dug the stake in even further and Dean let the tears fall from the image even as it threw it’s head back, wings tearing apart the cloak as it yelled, the light coming from it a hazel colored one mixed with a light purple before it slid off the stake and fell to the floor, the wings burning the ground around it. Dean knew how to fake a death as well as Gabriel.
“Sam-“ Gabriel started to say as Sam stared at the image and started to shake his head.
“Why..why isn’t it changing back? Why?!” He yelled as Castiel went and examined the image.
“Because it was your brother, Sam…” Gabriel said with a sigh as he knelt down next to it and closed it’s eyes.
Dean watched Sam punch the wall before looking back to the body.
“Whatever. At least I saved him from that shit,” and Sam started to leave...
“Sam,” Dean appeared and looked at his brother quietly with sad eyes as the image disappeared and Dean summoned the stake to him. He saw Sam stop, eyes wide for a moment before he pulled out the colt and shot the bullet at Dean, who yawned and stopped it with a snap, Gabriel smirked at him as the bullet dropped.
“Wow really? You’re not even going to let me talk…you really don’t have a soul do you?” He said sadly as Cas came over to Dean and pulled him into a hug and Dean smiled and hugged him back.
“I missed you too, Cas,” he said with a smile and Sam just watched for a long moment before Dean let go of Cas and looked to his brother.
“You just fucking let me kill your copy!” Sam growled and Dean shrugged as he looked down to the spot.
“Good thing it was a copy or I’m pretty sure I really would be dead,” Dean said darkly as he looked Sam over.
“Why did you kill those people?” Sam asked and Dean rubbed the bridge of his nose.
“Dude, I already told you. They were intruding on the houses of people I protect, and they all had intent to harm them. So I did my job and protected them. Sam do you have any idea how many humans are really the monsters?” Dean said with a world weary sigh and Sam just scoffed.
“Yeah, and one of them is you,” He growled as he pulled out another stake…Dean looked to Cas.
“Cas can you get him out of here please?” He said quietly and Cas nodded and went over to Sam, knocking him out and then leaving with him…
Shortly after Gabriel went over to Dean and put a hand on his shoulder and there was a flutter of wings and Dean was suddenly in what looked like a magnificent apartment and he dropped the invisibility.
Dean shrugged off the trench coat, exposing the wings.
“So…Sam has no soul?” He asked Gabriel as the angel handed him a beer.
“Yes. Sam has had no soul since the moment his body reappeared on Earth,” Gabriel’s quiet for a moment.
“So you wanted to learn how to hide those wings?” Gabriel asked, smiling faintly at Dean, though Dean noted the sadness in the Archangel’s expression.
“I’m not ashamed of them! It just makes it hard to go out in public with them, you know cause I’d stick out like a sore thumb,” He saw Gabriel smile at that and then guided Dean through how to hide his wings with a thought. It was really all about willing them to stay hidden in a dimension no-one could see. Dean thanked him and Gabriel chuckled as he sat down next to Dean, who sighed happily as his back was against the leather of the couch he then looked to Gabriel who smiled at him, seeming like he was considering something...
