Summary: Richard always did love kids but when he comes across these two kids just recently orphaned, he cant' help but insist he adopt them, wanting nothing more but to make their lives better or at least bearable.

The next few months were easier than Richard could have expected. He balanced work well with the time during which the kids were at school, always getting off in time to pick them up on the way home, but he was almost always exhausted from the emotional toll work took on him and he would have to take a long shower when he got home. Then he’d go to help the boys with their homework and play around with them before around five at night pushing or well nowadays nudging Gabriel into the garage to work out. Richard would actually work out with him nowadays, Richard staying in shape while keeping Gabriel company as he worked hard. After the first month Gabriel had lost about twenty pounds and it was clear he was too as that gut of his seemed to melt away bit by bit with every few weeks that passed. Richard had brought the boys home in September and now it was December, so it had been three months.

Gabriel had become a lean mean fit rowdy twenty four year old hyperactive machine and now he was playing around with the kids a whole lot more, he and Richard taking them to the park and Gabriel now wearing clothes around Richard’s size, wearing casual T-shirts and jeans with an occasional tan jacket on the crisper days.

It was pretty clear that Sam had developed a fondness for Gabriel and Dean a fondness for Richard, both men happy. Yet both boys seemed to love to climb all over Gabriel and tickle him to death, Richard joining in and then the three would gang up on him.
More often than not Misha would come over at least four times a week to hang out and enjoy the happy family. He always seemed to smile in this almost secretive kind of way when he watched them and he loved getting involved and playing with the boys on their Nintendo Wii and then out in the backyard, playing catch with them and everyone else, and even playing tag with the boys. There were happy and life was going well for them.

They should have known it wouldn’t last.

It was the twentieth of December. It had started off like a normal day though it was snowing and the tree was up and decorated and there were presents under it that Richard had to keep Gabriel, Sam and Dean away from. Richard swore the kids were rubbing off on Gabriel, a lot. Fortunately he was still doing his job and getting an income to help pay off the monthly bills.
This was Richard’s last day on duty before he was off for the holidays. He was happy and it really did show. He left the house alone, the boys on their winter break from school and fast asleep in bed, Gabriel was asleep as well. Richard never did like waking him up to make food unless the kids were up, so today he’d made his own food for breakfast and had just finished his last bit of coffee.

The day went by pretty well and it was half an hour before his shift ended…and that’s when it happened. Richard and Misha were sharing the car today when there were gunshots nearby and the two looked to each other and nodded, Misha stopping the car as he’d been driving and both came out, guns at the ready. There were gangs acting up lately. Why couldn’t they get the memo about peace on earth this time of the year?

They went down the alley which split off at one end into two separate ones. Misha went to the left and Richard to the right. He didn’t have his flashlight out and it was hard to see and he had just passed a large dumpster when a man leaped out at him and stabbed him in the back and Richard felt the cold metal biting into his skin and the pain that accompanied it as he let out a yell and several shots as he fell to the ground, the blood staining his uniform quickly. He could see the man retreating, even in his now quickly fading eyesight. He aimed…and shot the gun and the man hit the ground and he saw another figure running towards him and was about to pull the trigger.

“Don’t shoot! Richard it’s me! Misha!” Misha…his voice was panicked as Richard let himself fall back, panting hard and bleeding in the snow as he felt tears in his eyes that threatened to freeze.

“Richard? Hey! Hey, come on don’t go to sleep! Don’t you dare die on me!” Misha said as he quickly spoke to dispatch.
“Officer wounded! I repeat officer wounded and in need of EMT!” He said loudly and Richard frowned as he could feel the life draining out of him as he felt the blackness closing in he saw something behind Misha he hadn’t seen before.

“M..Misha?” He said weakly as he saw his eyesight wavered and he saw Misha look at him sharply, he’d been watching for the EMT…

“Richard?” He asked, his voice filled with worry, and Richard could swear he saw some sort of weird glow around his friend.

“Is…is there… black angel wings…painted on the wall be…behind you?” He asked and he thought he saw Misha pale but he wasn’t sure even as Misha glanced back and then to him.

“No, Richard there isn’t…why? Do you see black wings?” Misha asked and he sounded…shocked.
Richard nodded faintly.

“And Misha…help Gabe take care of…of the kids…” He whispered and suddenly the world went silent around him even as he saw Misha’s mouth move, felt him shaking him even as his eyes closed and there was darkness….
--
Misha looked to Richard in shock and he shifted, holding the dead man to him and nearly crying. He…He knew he should have used them, if only a little to make it so the wound wasn’t so serious…Misha wanted to beat himself up right now, and his breath was hitched and shallow as he looked around and he swallowed. Richard hadn’t been imagining anything. It was only the dying and dead that would be able to see the shadows of his wings, of what he really was. He is an angel of the lord…He’d been roaming the earth for a good thirty years; he’d made this vessel when he’d come to earth. He was a wandering guardian angel. He’d wanted to keep an eye on humans while not using his powers. The others in the Lord’s Garrison didn’t seem to mind, so long as he wasn’t doing anything against the rules…

He’s assimilated with the humans, gotten to learn feelings and what needed to be learned. He’d joined the police officers as a way to help people in a normal way for them. Richard had joined the force just months after Misha did and man…Misha had never seen a soul so… so kind and just so…peaceful and pure. The man had been out with several girlfriends but never married, lived with his cousin and…Misha could see a love for life there in Richard, and a love for kids and by dad it had made Misha’s eyes water at first. He’d thought there weren’t any humans like that anymore but Richard had just proved him wrong. Once Misha had composed himself he’d gone over and had been the first to introduce himself to Richard, who was all smiles and kind. The then twenty year old man had just finished his training and he was full of energy and just so…happy.

Over the years Richard hadn’t lost any of his qualities, though his soul dimmed as all souls did with age and Misha hated to see it like that, yet even through all those years on the job…Richard still had this innocence about him that attracted kids to him and him to kids. Richard wasn’t like the other men who got bitter and resentful after about a year or two. No he was just as spirited and easy going as he had been the day Misha had met him, and by now they were best friends, hell maybe even brothers, or well as close to brothers as they could be.
Misha had also met Gabriel when the young man had moved in with Richard four years ago. His soul…damn it was just as pure as Richard’s, though more playfulness and mischievousness to it, but there was that love for kids there too… These two didn’t have an ounce of evil, of any sort of darkness in them. No trace of the sin that Adam and Eve had brought to humanity. Those boys…they were nearly perfect. He knew they sinned but he’d hear their prayers at night asking for forgiveness and guidance. Misha had learned to think of them as family…and now…

Now Richard is dead and the EMT wasn’t here yet and he hated seeing Richard’s soul so dim…but wait… Normally souls left when a person died and they’d go to get judged…but no…Richard’s soul was hanging on desperately even if it was slipping away. Misha could sense the desperation, the want to stay here to keep on living…to see the boys again.

Taking a deep breath Misha let his grace spread out inside him fully for the first time in thirty years, the power rushing through him, his wings twitching as he healed a bit of the wound to make it so it wasn’t bad enough to kill Richard…and then he brought life back to the body that is Richard’s and the man started breathing painfully again, his eyes fluttering open again as pain crossed his face and as the light of his soul grew stronger…

“Hey…Richard, I thought I lost you there,” He said softly as he heard sirens and was only then aware of the tears that had fallen as he recalled how much this human, this man met to him…His human brother…

“D…Don’t cry Misha…I..I’m not…going anywhere,” He whispered as the sirens got closer. He’s right, he isn’t going anywhere and Richard seems to actually manage to barely keep consciousness as he looks up at Misha with glassy eyes.

“Misha…I…I must be hallucinating…I…I can see you glowing…” Richard mumbled and Misha looked down at himself…He wasn’t glowing…Unless Richard was somehow seeing his grace…which he tried to hide again but he knew it was too late…but Richard really was still close to dying, it was only Misha’s interference that had Richard alive right now and Misha wiped the tears away as he lifted up Richard.

“Come on, the EMT’s close Richard…and I’m not glowing, you know I can’t glow…” He said as he carried Richard out.

“I know…but it’s…its beautiful to look at…” Richard mumbles and Misha looks down at him, he can’t help but laugh a little.

“Well don’t go into any lights yet, we want you to live you know,” He says as the EMT arrives and the men comes out and rush over and Misha can feel Richard tense.

“It’s the medical workers Richard, don’t worry,” He said carefully and he felt Richard relax in his arms as he put him on the stretcher and they immediately start working on him, Misha getting in his police car and following the ambulance, sirens on. He was at the hospital when the ambulance was, running alongside them as they rushed Richard to the ER, the man unconscious now…it had seemed only Misha’s grace had been keeping him up… He was told to wait in the waiting room and he did. He’d learned how to be discreet with his powers over the years.

He’d used them once or twice to help a wounded victim cling to life, healing them enough that they wouldn’t die for another few hours as they were, giving doctors a chance to fix them up…Yet here with Richard…He’d brought him back and he feared he’d be punished for it, for bringing someone back without permission from the host… Yet the archangels hadn’t come yet. They hadn’t come to smite him or tell him off. Not yet. They probably knew he’d actually tell them off if they did now, and Misha knew he’d get demotion for doing such a thing, but for now he just waited and worried for his human brother to be fixed up.

A doctor came out after an hour and looked to Misha.

“Your partner is going to be fine…Though…he…won’t be able to walk again,” The doctor said, leaving Misha stunned.

“We’ve done the best we can, but we’re lucky we were able to patch him up without any complications,” The doctor said, seeing Misha’s look, “you can see him in about half an hour…but I suggest you call his family and let them know what happened first.” The doctor said calmly and Misha nodded mutely as he pulled out his cell phone and first call the chief. He explained how Richard had got injured…and explained that he was crippled. He was aware of the chief taking down notes and writing the report for him, he seemed to hear how quietly broken Misha was, having to tell him all this.

“Thanks for telling me, Misha, really…Want me to call Gabriel and tell him?” He asked and Misha immediately said no, that it would be better if it came from him. Then he hung up and took steadying breaths. He then goes down to the home phone for Richard’s place and he presses the call button.
--
The phone rang and Gabriel tried to detach himself from the two boys tickling him and he fled to Richard’s room, picking up the phone, laughing as the boys kept tickling him.
“Okay guys, really stop it, I’m trying to take a call here, go and…eat some candy,” He said as they beamed and went running out of the room.

“Hello? Sorry about that kids love to tickle me,” Gabriel said as he heard silence on the other end and thought the line had gone dead and he was about to hang up when the person finally spoke.

“Gabriel…” It was Misha’s voice and that one word sent alarm bells through Gabriel’s head, he could hear sadness and concern in it.

“What’s wrong,” He said instantly, his face falling as he got up with the chordless phone and he saw the boys running around.

“It’s…it’s Richard…We were investigating some reports of gunshots, we separated and…I heard him yell, two gunshots and…a guy stabbed him in the back…” Gabriel heard Misha pause and struggle to compose himself as wave upon wave of horror seemed to slap him in the face, “They took him to the ER and…they just told me he won’t walk again…” Misha went silent and Gabriel just stood there in shock as his legs became weak.

“D-Did the bastard that did this get away?” Gabriel asked, sitting down on the bed and he saw the kids run up to him and he didn’t realize he was crying and the boys looked worried and they were about to ask him what was wrong when Gabriel gave them a ‘shh’ gesture.

“No, even as he was he had damn good aim…He shot the man twice, killed him,” Misha says, his voice steadying and then there was a voice in the background, “They’re letting me visit him now, Gabriel…I’ll call you and come over to watch the kids so you can visit him…”

“No, we’re all coming,” Gabriel said firmly as he started putting on his shoes, “we should all be there,” He said as he thought he heard Misha trying to protest this, but he let it slide with a sigh.

“Fine, his room number is 205,” He said, Gabriel paused.

“Misha?” He said softly and Misha’s breath caught for a moment.

“Yeah?” He asked as Richard could tell Misha had braced himself for anger against him.

“Thanks for letting me know. I’ll be there in twenty minutes,” With that he hung up the phone and told the boys to get bundled up as he himself did.

“What happened?” Dean asked as Gabriel wiped away the tears and looked t the nine year old, who looked worried.

“Richard…um…He got hurt, he’s in the hospital, Misha’s with him.” He said and he saw Dean’s eyes go wide, “but they say he’s going to be okay except…He…Oh God I can’t tell you this…I’m having a hard time saying it myself, just go and get dressed and we will go see him,” He said and Dean hurried off to his room and got bundled up in the warm clothes meant for a snowy day like this. The boys were ready within minutes and Gabriel took them to the car, grabbing the keys as he nearly forgot them before closing and locking the door behind them.
--
Misha waited quietly in the hospital room, looking to Richard who was supposedly in a deep sleep. Misha felt horrible…He should have been able to stop this…He knew he could heal Richard with but a thought…but he was scared. Scared of how the host would react…So here he sat, dreading it all…

He heard quick footsteps outside and he looked up to see Gabriel and the kids coming in and Gabriel…Gabriel definitely paled when he saw Richard there in the bed and the Boys were confused.

“What’s wrong with him?” Dean asked, looking to Misha, who looked to Gabriel who collapsed into a seat next to Richard.

“Well, Dean…Richard got hurt and…he won’t be able to walk again,” He said quietly and Dean’s eyes widened and he ran over to Richard’s bedside to Gabriel and he watched as the nine year old climbed up onto the bed, Gabriel not stopping him as Dean put a hand to Richard’s shoulder, looking at him sadly and with eyes that threatened to release his tears…

Misha watched as after ten minutes Richard stirred and opened his eyes, blinking blearily as he looked around to everyone there, squinting at them.

“Can…Can someone turn on the light?” He asked in a quiet voice and Misha was up and turning on the light before anyone else. Richard blinks but it’s only then that his eyes seem to focus. His mouth curves into a smile that reaches his eyes as he sees Dean on the bed at his side, he wraps an arm around the kid and pulls him close.

“Hey Dean,” He says with a soft smile, pressing a kiss to the kid’s forehead, smiling at him and Dean smiled back as Richard wiped away the tears.

“Hey, don’t cry, I’ll be fine, you’ll see,” He said softly as he tried to move, tried to get up to prove it, but…his legs wouldn’t respond, the only things that functioned was his bladder he noticed. He felt his insides go cold and he was pretty sure the shock registered on his face as he shifted and had Dean poke his legs hard. Dean did it reluctantly and watched as a growing horror spread across Richard’s face. Misha got up and grabbed Dean, putting him down on the ground.

“I’m sorry, Richard,” Misha whispered as Richard looked to him in confusion.

“I wasn’t there…I should have been there, we shouldn’t have split up,” Misha said as Gabriel looked quietly between the two as he held Sam, who was cuddled up to him.

“It’s not your fault Misha…I…I should have been paying more attention,” He said with a sigh as he seemed to all too quickly resign himself to this. It…was sad to say the least, and Misha hated seeing him so…depressed. He went up to Richard and put a hand on his shoulder and Richard looked up to him and put his hand to Misha’s, seeming to think Misha was comforting him even though he was really planting the seed of hope in Richard. He leant the younger man a bit more strength he could use later to help him. Richard squeezed Misha’s hand lightly and Misha smiled at him.

He brought his hand away and backed up and went for the door.

“I need to clean up and get out of this uniform…I’ll talk to you guys later…And Richard?” He looked back to Richard who was looking at him, curiosity on his face.

Misha’s face broke into a smile as he said the next words, “Have faith,” And with those words he made that seed, that spark of hope start it’s work, and Richard seemed confused as to why Misha would say that, even as Misha made his wings move and make their fluttering sound very clear and obvious before he left…
