Summary: It's new years eve 2013 and Dean's having these dreams again. Dreams of Gabriel dying at Lucifer's hands and the constant cry of help before the dream ends. This year however, something new happens that leaves Dean scrambling to find a way to get Gabriel back.
Pain…Flames…Screams…What…? He blinked and looked around him and saw creatures he knew had no souls screaming in agony. Vampires, demons…Demons… He saw Crowley there among them and couldn’t help the smirk. He’d never really liked Crowley. So…this was limbo then? Looked a lot like hell really. Gabriel mused as he ran a hand through his hair and he hung his head as he saw just where he was, trapped in Holy fire for some reason. Great so he couldn’t move…
--
Months, months , maybe years went by and he hated it. It was like he was not someone that was once an archangel being trapped here, hearing all these screams and crying and being stuck in this ring of Holy fire…it made him want to pass over the flames and die again, but he knew he’d just come back to this spot again…He’d actually tried it. Tried to escape by dying…but it only brought him back in the circle again and Gabriel not only just sat there…
--
Dean shifted in his sleep and let out a soft sigh. It was New Years eve, 2013 and he and Sam were just well…trying to sleep. Dean…Dean was asleep and that was the problem…
He kept seeing something he had never witnessed. He always had this dream before a new year started…Gabriel was always in it, was always being stabbed by Lucifer, always throwing his head back…always dying in that brightass angelic way… Always falling and always laying there with his wings splayed out…burned against the ground. He always heard a cry for help in the dreams near the end, but then he’d wake up shuddering and gasping for breath and Sam would look at him worried for him. It had been happening since the first New Years Eve after the Archangel had died…It had become a haunting tradition apparently…
But now…now for the first time he saw something else…it was a smokey realm now and there was screaming and crying and pleading and fire…but it was nothing like the hell Dean had known…no if anything this was worse…He found himself walking along it and he saw familiar angels he’d helped to kill and he also saw demons, one of which was Azazel and then Crowley, but they didn’t see him. That he was glad for…but they were all trapped in some different way…the angels though mostly by holy fire or chains with symbols on them… Dean came to his destination and he blinked in shock yet well…he’d kindof expected this… There in a ring of holy Fire stepping over it and dying only to reappear back in the center with tears streaming down his soot covered face is Gabriel, who shuddered and sat down in the center, head hanging as he stared at the ground.
“Gabriel?” Dean asked with a trembling voice, just now realizing he could speak…but the archangel didn’t seem to hear him. Dean swallowed and backed up and then leapt over the flames and landed in the circle next to Gabriel and tried to reach out and grasp the archangel’s shoulder but his hand passed through Gabriel, who didn’t seem to have noticed anything around him now, he looked resigned, defeated and like he’d given up a long time ago on trying to get out… It made Dean’s heart break for the archangel. Sure Gabriel had been an annoying stubborn asshole…but he’d died for them and what he’d arrived at after Death wasn’t worth what he had done… Dean had a hard time breathing as his chest constricted as he fought to keep from actually crying…He hated seeing Gabriel like this…
“I’ll get you out of here. I’ll find a way…” He said firmly and Gabriel didn’t move and Dean got up and started to leave when Gabriel’s hand shot out and grabbed a hold of his and Dean blinked, wait hadn’t his hand gone through just seconds ago.
“Stay…please…just a little longer,” Gabriel said at long last, his voice broken, hoarse and tired. It sounded like he hadn’t used it in…years. Dean looked to him and sat back down and marveling at how NOW he could actually touch Gabriel, he pulled the archangel into a warm hold and wrapped his arms around his chest.
“Gabriel? Can I ask you something?” He whispered In the archangel’s ear.
“You already asked me something, but sure…You can ask another question…” He said with a small stab at sarcasm, and Dean couldn’t help a small smile and rubbed Gabriel’s back at that.
“How am I here?” He asked softly and the archangel shrugged his shoulders not seeming to know.
“I don’t know, but I’m glad you’re here…I know you’re dreaming and all…but I’m glad to have a visitor for the first time in three years…” He really did sound grateful and yet so broken at the same time and it made Dean’s heart break even more…
Dean just squeezed Gabriel’s frame lightly and the angel shifted in Dean’s arms, turned and kissed him. On the lips. And Dean liked it… He could sense the sadness and loneliness and yet the gratitude for Dean’s being there in that one kiss and Dean returned it with warmth and a soft comfort. He didn’t know how long they were kissing for, but the next thing he knew he was waking up with a start, Sam yelling something and shaking him.
Dean blinked owlishly at him and then saw Castiel standing there actually looking worried.
“Oh thank God you’re awake!” Sam said with relief as he brought his hands away from Dean’s shoulders and Dean merely blinked at him in confusion.
“What happened?” Dean muttered, sitting up and seeing they were still in the same crappy motel room… Castiel was the one that answered.
“You have been asleep for a week straight, Dean. I could not wake you, nor could your brother and your mind was blocked from me…” Castiel said and Dean blinked as he realized just how hungry he was .
“It’s…been a week?” He asked in shock and both nodded and Dean got up and staggered over to the bathroom and did his duty before coming out and he looked to Sam and Castiel.
“Dean, just what was it you were dreaming about that could have kept you stick in the dream for so long?” Sam asked as Castiel vanished and reappeared a few moments later with food for Dean, which got Dean giving the angel a mumbled thanks as he shakily took the bag from him and sat down at the table, getting several meal’s worth of food out and he started eating it. It was only after his first burger and when his hands were steadier did he speak again.
“It…was about Gabriel in purgatory…” Dean whispered and he saw Castiel stiffen, Sam also stiffened in shock and Dean noticed it, “I was visiting him there apparently…It started off as the typical him dying dream I always have on New Year’s eve…but then it….changed…I found myself walking through Purgatory…” He shudders and stared at his hands. “It…it’s worse than Hell, Sammy…So much worse…” He was silent for a moment and he swallowed and grabbed another burger, hands shaking more now as he bit into the burger then swallowed and spoke again, “He…he..He needed company and I don’t know I just…stayed there with him…I didn’t want to leave him alone…” Dean said with a shrug. Castiel frowned and Sam put a hand on Dean’s shoulder and squeezed it, Dean shot him a small smile and then finished off his food and he picked up the wrappers and threw it away.
He didn’t know what to do. So far they hadn’t been able to figure out how to get into Purgatory besides dying and even then they would go to Heaven or hell, them having souls. As much as he hated to think it, the angels didn’t have souls, not like humans. They had their Grace that was their being but it wasn’t classified as a soul…
Dean got up and found his shoes and put them on and put on a jacket and he looked to the two watching him.
“I’m going to go for a drive…Don’t follow me.” He said quietly and then he grabbed the keys and went out to the Impala and drove away from the hotel and he went out for the whole day, driving to where he knew he had to…To the hotel. He pulled up to it, the hotel in disrepair and long abandoned and he walked into it silently and wandered through the halls til he got to the ballroom and then he looked to the floor. There was the imprint of wings, but no body save for a shredded piece of Gabriel’s jacket. Dean sighed and figured that a shred of jacket was better than nothing and he got to work, setting up an alter for a summoning ritual where he supposed was the general area of where Gabriel had died was, seeing as the wing imprints marked it pretty clearly.
Dean put the shredded piece of jacket in the offering plate and then started the ritual, flames sparking into the air and turning blue as he made a cut on his arm poled up some blood on the blade of the knife and then added it and the flames got even higher and there was an explosion that rocked the hotel and there were sudden yells and screams echoing through the place and Dean cursed when he realized his mistake, Gabriel was stuck in holy fire, there’s no way…But then he felt as his jacket was torn from him and he yelped , then there was another explosion and the flames arched higher into the air, threatening to burn Dean as he kept his bleeding arm over the offering plate and he was muttering a summoning spell under his breath as well, hoping this would help as the ground shook as if trying to get him to stop…
“Come on Gabriel…I know you can make it here…come on!” He yelled to the air, “COME ON YOU SON OF A BITCH!” There was a flash of light and the explosions stopped and the fire died down. There was a thud and a crunch as a heavy object fell onto the alter and the plate… Dean blinked his eyes and saw that it was Gabriel and he smelled of smoke… Dean picked up the angel and felt for a pulse and tried to get him awake. He felt no pulse and he couldn’t sense anything from him…All Dean had succeeded in doing was getting Gabriel’s vessel back… Dean hung his head…He’d failed Gabriel… He was about to get up when there was a high pitched tone in the room for a brief moment and then the vessel opened his eyes, white light coming from them and his mouth and then there was shallow and soon panicked breathing as Gabriel’s eyes moved frantically to see where he was and then he started to try and get up.
“No, don’t.” Dean said sharply, not sure just how wounded Gabriel’s vessel was and he could feel the warmth returning to the vessel’s skin. Gabriel blinked and looked up to him quietly. He didn’t say anything but listened for once as Dean gave him a moment and then lifted Gabriel up, expecting the angel to protest and say he wasn’t a little kid, that he could walk on his own, but he didn’t say anything, letting his head rest on Dean’s shoulder, eyes closing as his breathing got slower but deeper. Dean set him down in the passenger seat in the Impala and Gabriel opened his eyes and silently put the seat belt on.
“This is another of my hallucinations isn’t it?” Gabriel asked after two hours of quiet music playing from the radio, he’d been looking at dean and out the windows repeatedly, his voice quieter than ever.
“Does it feel like one to you?” Dean asked and Gabriel shrugged, eyes downcast as he looked to his hands.
“They always feel real, and I always get pulled out of them…” Gabriel said as Dean glanced to him. There was another six hours til he got back to the hotel…
“This isn’t-“ but then he got interrupted by his cell phone ringing. He cursed as he had to fumbled for it in his pocket and the car swerved several times before he got it out and answered it, seeing as it was Sam.
“What?” He snapped at Sam, irritated for interrupting him, and he remembered that his cut was still bleeding on his right arm, which was on the steering wheel.
“Where am I? Well I would have been in a ditch, you made me nearly crash the car!” Dean growled as he glanced to Gabriel and saw him looking out the window again.
“I told you I was going out! Damnit Sam! I just..I needed space! …You didn’t see what I saw! That place was worse than Hell! We’ve both been there; we both know what it looks and feels like! You didn’t see Gabriel kill himself by walking into holy fire only to get brought back in the middle of it again! YOU DIDN’T SEE HIM!” Dean yelled into the phone, for the moment forgetting Gabriel was there as Sam tried to talk to him and Dean took the phone and looked about ready to throw it out the window before he brought it back to his ear as he started going faster.
“Don’t you dare tell me it wasn’t real! It sure felt real!” Dean hung up and threw the phone into the backseat even as it rang again. It was only after he had started to calm down did he realize Gabriel was staring at him. He looked to Gabriel and blinked when he saw him look away to the window again but Dean saw his face reflected in it, he had a small smile on his face and there were glistening tears on his cheeks…
Dean looked back to the road and turned up the music which went to ‘Dance with the Devil by Breaking Benjamin’.
“Hey…anything broken? You injured at all?” Dean asked after an hour and a half of silence. Gabriel took a moment to respond.
“Not that I can tell,” He said in that still quiet voice as Dean yawned and was glad there was only fifteen minutes left. He hated how quiet Gabriel was right now. Did the angel still think this is a hallucination? He pulled up to the motel and got out and went over to Gabriel’s side and opened the door for him and frowned as Gabriel looked up at him as if confused for a moment.
“Well come on, you don’t expect me to carry you do you?” He asked raising his brow, but he did offer his hand as Gabriel unbuckled himself and then took a hold of Dean’s hand and Dean pulled him out of the car. He couldn’t believe how light Gabriel is as the angel struggled to use his feet and he actually gripped Dean’s arm so hard he swore he was going to have a handprint shaped bruise even as he let out a hiss of pain. Gabriel blinked and shot him an apologetic look but Dean only messed up the angel’s hair before closing the car door and making sure it’s locked before leading Gabriel to the hotel room, Gabriel still a bit shaky on his feet but at least he could walk on his own and stand somewhat steadily. Dean unlocked the door and then opened it.
“Hey dumbass, Tell me I was imagining Gabriel now!” Dean called into the room as he stepped aside and Gabriel blinked at him and went inside cautiously, Dean following and closing the door. Sam was definitely in shock and Castiel was standing there staring at his brother. Gabriel barely smiled as Sam came over and hugged him, Hell Castiel even hugged him too and Gabriel looked around and went over to a bed and sat down. Dean sat down next to him and pulled him close.
“Hey…you’ve barely said anything…come on please say something that’s well…yourself.” Dean pleaded and he looked at him with worry and concern. He couldn’t get what he saw of Gabriel in that Dream or whatever out of his head, and Gabriel was everyone of those things right now… He still didn’t get an answer out of Gabriel and with a growl he grabbed the arch angel and locked lips with him, kissing him out of frustration, yet his overall worry, and warmth for the angel. Gabriel seemed surprised for a moment and then kissed back, both of them were like this for a while, lips soft against each other and tongues flitting inside their mouths. He pushed Gabriel onto the bed and ran his hands up the angel’s sides and got a shiver from him and then he pulled away.
“Wait…this is when I usually…-“
“snap out of it? C’mon Gabriel, my visiting you in Purgatory wasn’t a hallucination, nor was it a dream it just…was. It got me to call you back here…” He breathed his breath warm against Gabriel’s skin.
A true smile spread across Gabriel’s face as he pulled Dean to him this time and his kisses changed, the got more wild, hotter and more passionate and Dean returned them in kind until there was a loud clearing of someone’s throat and Dean simply flipped off Sam and kept kissing Gabriel who was already starting to unbutton Dean’s pants.
“Um…Sam let’s…go somewhere else until our brothers are done saying their hellos…” And Castiel ushered him out even as Dean let out a low moan and nuzzled his nose against Gabriel’s own and Gabriel laughed softly as Dean ran his hands through Gabriel’s hair.
“I missed you,” Dean whispered softly and Gabriel kissed him a bit longer, his lips soft against Dean’s and then he smiles at him.
“You know what? Just shut up and fuck me Dean, we can talk about this later and whether or not it was a good idea then.” He said as he slipped his pants off and it was then that dean realized Gabriel was just as hard for him right now as he was for the archangel and when they were both naked that they really started having the fun and both men came after an hour of foreplay and teasing each other.
When it was all over they were under the sheets and Dean was cuddled up to Gabriel, his arms wrapped protectively around him.
“I’m not going to let anything happen to you, Gabriel…” Dean said softly, and exhaustion in his voice. Gabriel couldn’t help the smile that was on his face. Now that he was in Dean’s arms…he forgot about everything he’d felt in Purgatory…
