When he is told he has no more than a month or two to live, Sam gets desperate and searches for ways to save Dean, effectively ditching his brother in the hospital, forgetting to visit him more than once or longer than an hour. Dean leaves after three days to go back to the hotel room and he comes across a dog as he's taking a breather. He has no idea the dog is more than he seems..
Chapter 1 Chapter 2 (Here)
Of course upon waking the dog was snuggled up to his side and Dean was still wrapped around it.
Sam looked up to Dean, having heard the gasp, “Weird dream?” Sam asked and Dean shrugged.
“I’m not sure what to classify it as…started off as bad and ended up with some random person hugging me… “ Dean muttered and Sam let out a snort of amusement. Gabe stretched and wiggled out from under Dean’s arms and then hopped down to the door and whimpered. Sam got up and let the dog out, and he watched as the dog went off to the grass and Sam looked away as the dog did his business. He looked back to see the dog kicking up grass before he came back with a bark and started whining then barking again, looking at Dean.
“Oh right…” Dean muttered as he got up and threw his keys to Sam, “He needs dog food and a leash and that crap, I like him too much to throw him out on the street,” Dean said as Gabe looked to him, his tail wagging happily and Dean smiled at the dog.
“I’ll get him food after I go get some breakfast…And Dean? I found someone that could help,” Sam grins and Dean tilts his head a bit.
“Like a doctor kind of a person?” Dean asked and Sam nodded.
“Yeah, he’s supposed to be really good,” Sam said right as the dog let out a snort and jumped onto Sam’s chair and looked down at the paper clippings, sniffing around for food. He let out another snort and then went to sniffing around the trashcan where the remains of Dean’s dinner was last night.
“Well, you better hurry, Sammy, he’s hungry,” Dean chuckled as Gabe pawed at the trashcan.
“Hey, Gabe! C’mere boy.” Dean said softly as he got up off the bed and staggered, not expecting his legs to be so…sore and weak…Though he caught himself and Sam looked at him worry clear.
“Go get me my pie, Sammy. I need it,” He said calmly as he pet the dog who nuzzled his head to Dean’s chest carefully. Dean smiled sadly at the dog and he pet him. As Sam was leaving he looked back and saw that for the moment his brother was happy, he was enjoying the dog’s company…
Sam came back about twenty minutes later with food, human and dog food. Sam poured dog food for Gabe and then set out a plate of food for Dean. Dean went to the table and started eating and there was the clink of metal against plastic and the dog was eating the food. Dean ate as much as he could before he found himself full and content and found the dog nudging his hand with his snout and Dean smiled at him before he was being pestered by Sam to go with him to this specialist he’d found. Dean sighed and told Gabe to be good and left.
In the end, Gabe the dog will have been a good boy. Though Gabriel the Archangel….that’s a whole other story.

Gabriel waited until he knew the boys were gone before shifting into his vessel’s true looks and he stretched.
“Fuck, I forgot how uncomfortable it is to be taller than two feet,” He mumbled as he snapped his fingers and a duplicate image of the dog form he assumed and it barked at him and wanted to play but he smiled and let it settle down before he left, he was barefoot but oh well. He willed himself unseen and he was as he arrived at the tent that was the ‘healing’ grounds of the Faith Priest, who knew nothing of what his wife was doing with the reaper…
Gabriel stood there as the people filed in. He was going to wait for the right moment to enact his plan. Once he was sure the Reverent or Priest or Healer or whatever was in the room with his wife, a single thought and the alter in their basement was utterly destroyed and up in flames. He watched as the reverend called Dean up and the wife SuAnne left the stage. Gabriel shattered her cross pendent as Roy put his hand to Dean’s head. Gabriel saw the Reaper go for SuAnne for revenge. It looked to Gabriel who nodded to it and it bowed and left…
Roy got a look of confusion and started to pull his hand away when Gabriel got a hold of it and pressed it back, his hand warm on Roy’s he then put his other hand to Dean’s chest. He let his grace flow into Dean, a hot warmth that had the hunter gasping in surprise. Gabriel decided to make it interesting and as his grace collected at Dean’s heart, he let it heal Dean’s heart and he made Dean’s skin visibly glow from underneath and the glow reach his eyes. There was a flash of light from Dean’s eyes as Gabriel healed Dean not only of his heart problems, but of every scar. During this process Dean fell to his knees, his skin was regaining it’s color as Gabriel let himself be seen by everyone, but in a different image. He made sure his hair was blonde; his eyes blue his face structure altered, wings showing. He heard Sam yelling at him as he finished and let Dean fall to the floor. Dean was clearly out of it when Gabriel let him fall. The Archangel then looked to the others.
“Your faith is being rewarded,” He said calmly before he clapped his hands and healed all in the room before looking to Dean, who was staring at him in shock. Gabriel just smiled and then vanished.
Gabriel appeared at the hotel and made the dog fake vanish and he quickly turned into the dog and jumped up on the bed and waited for the brothers to get home. He looked to the food in the dish still there he snorted and made it vanish and replaced it with good food as he leapt down and ate it, licking his chops before getting back up and he sat there staring at the door, wings twitching in agitation and impatience as he started pacing and he let out a series of growls that were curses. He now understood why dogs were always so happy to see their owners. The waiting was torture and you had absolutely nothing to do! Though Gabriel stayed a god Archangel…he didn’t destroy the room out of sheer boredom, or pee on their clothes. No. He sat on Dean’s bed, waiting…
So when Dean and Sam finally opened the door Gabriel leapt off the bed and tackled Dean, barking and nuzzling his head against the man’s chest before showering him with kisses. Gabriel’s grace was definitely warm at the sight of Dean and Gabriel kept telling himself that the kissing part was an act…but it was a good thing he was a dog instead of human or Dean would be pinned to the wall and getting tongued by Gabriel. Though even now the laughter that came from Dean’s mouth, the happiness that warmed the hunter was enough to have an already wagging tail wag even more.
“I think we know whose dog he is now,” Sam chuckled as he set food down on the table and watched as Dean lavished attention on Gabriel, messing up the dog’s fur and petting him happily.

Several months passed in which Dean and Sam ran into their father again, who scolded them for having Gabe, who growled at the older Winchester and proved how useful he really was to hunts when he was able to track and alert them of the Vampires they were looking for, and later of Meg the demon, who he mauled. She had laughed at him and thrown him against a wall, hard and he let out a painful yelp but it had caused enough of a distraction for the boys to get away. The demon had laughed.
“See how they treat you dog? They left you for dead!” Meg laughed and Gabriel got up, panting and growling as he tensed and waited. When she tried to get him, he dodged out of the way. He then pounced on her and slammed her into the ground as Dean came back.
“Gabe!” The Winchester yelled as Gabe was thrown off and he hit a brick wall with a crack. Gabriel would have cursed out loud if he could but all that came out was a whine as he fought to keep from destroying Meg with his powers and giving away what he was. The boys hadn’t forgotten what had happened with the faith healer and him… They were still trying to figure out if he had been a creature posing as an angel or what, but Dean kept saying the healing had felt right the whole time…It had given Dean something he hadn’t had before. Faith. Dean knew that an angel had healed him just on the sensation of the healing, of Gabriel’s grace.
Gabriel had seen hope, and a bit of faith rise up in the man… Though of course that got snuffed out when John died, and it was barely a thing that could be called a spark, maybe a small smolder when Dean figured out that his father had done a deal for him when he had been comatose.
Gabriel was there the whole time as the dog that Dean went to, whispered to quietly when Sam was either gone or asleep. He learned a lot about Dean during these times, of how he thought himself worthless, and how he should have died instead of his father. He would pet Gabriel or be holding him close during these times, Dean’s soul crying out for comfort, for something to take care of him. Gabriel felt a horrible sadness in his grace and he would reach out with it and smother the saddened soul and nurse it for a while. Dean would be peaceful for that time until Gabriel deemed it safe to pull his grace away. The Archangel however, would never see the sense of loss on dean’s face whenever he did that…
Sam soon leaves, all because of what john had told Dean, what Dean had been forced to tell him. That night Dean had pulled out his gun and Gabriel tensed, hearing Dean’s thoughts and seeing the gun be put under his chin. FUCK.
