Word Count: 3,170

Gabriel sighed and went into the nearest bar he could find there in Malibu California. Damn Winchesters. He swore they hated his guts even after he died because of them. Gabriel looked around the bar and saw it was filled basically with young people ranging from their late teens to late twenties but for one man at the bar counter. He was hunched over a drink and Gabriel tilted his head a bit at the blue and white bowler shirt and tan shorts on the man. He had brown hair so dark it could be mistaken for black hair… Gabriel noticed the air of loneliness about the man and he took pity on his and sat next to him.
“Leave me alone, Alan…” The man said in a hoarse and emotionless voice. It was a shame his handsome face was twisted with annoyance and loneliness. The man was clearly half drunk, at the point where he couldn’t legally drive, and where he had the blurred vision.

“Who’s Alan?” Gabriel asked as he ordered some of the expensive whiskey, the female bartender clearly eyeing him as she gave him his drink. The man started and looked to Gabriel, taking in his appearance, Gabriel’s tan jacket and majenta dress shirt and jeans. Gabriel rocked that look and he did his best to keep it on all the time even as he saw the man look back to his drink and take a long swig of it only for it to be refilled by the bartender seconds later and he shrugs.

“Sorry, thought you were my annoying brother…I’m Charlie by the way, Charlie Harper,” He said as he offered his hand and Gabriel took it with a smile.

“I’m Gabriel, it’s nice to meet you Charlie,” Gabriel said politely as he then downed his whiskey in one go. When he looked to Charlie the man looked mildly shocked even as Gabriel took a closer look at Charlie and saw the man’s soul. He almost flinched back. HOLY CRAP how was this man still…alive? His soul was barely a speck of light, barely there. The man was dead inside and he…somehow wasn’t dead. Usually people with souls as dim as this were the people in hospital rooms that were just so old. He saw how lonely this man is and just can’t understand how he’s still going…

“You okay? You kinda look…stressed?” Charlie’s voice cut through Gabriel’s shock. He shook his head and put on a half assed smile.

“Sorry, I had a really bad day, I kinda zoned out there,” Gabriel said as he downed his refilled whiskey and let out a breath.

Charlie shrugged, “Happens to everyone, has happened to me,” he says with a shrug, “But this, my new friend, is why they have alcohol,” Charlie says with a grin and he lifts his glass and Gabriel can’t help but smile and they clink glasses together. They fall silent for a moment as both men take a drink of their respective choices of liquor.

“So…what brings you here Gabriel?” Charlie asks and Gabriel let out a sigh.

“Mm…two asshats constantly rejecting my offers to help them…This time they threw me out…Assholes…Now I need to find another place…” He mutters as he downs more of his drink and Charlie seemed to frown in thought even as Gabriel quietly reflected on how painful the banishment sigil had been…

“Really? What do they do?” Charlie asked as he took another drink and then looked curiously at Gabriel.

“They’re…private detectives. I’ve tried to offer my help but they just don’t like it,” Gabriel mutters and Charlie scowls.

“Then screw them,” Charlie said with a shrug as he drank the rest of his whiskey. Gabriel frowned and took another drink of his whiskey.

“I should…,” He then pauses for a moment, looking back to Charlie and seeing that depressing thing that is his soul…It was calling out to his angelic nature, it needed to be nurtured back to the way it had once been… He had to fight not to do anything for the moment…

“So…what’s got you here?” Gabriel asked and Charlie shook his head.

“My idiot brother and his kid. I just want to get away from them but my brother just won’t leave my house. I’ve been more than generous with him…” Charlie said with an annoyed growl to his voice.

“Let me guess…he’s a worthless sponge?” Gabriel asks and Charlie nods, running a hand through his hair.

“He owes me over $5,000 that I know he won’t pay back…letting him ‘stay there for a few days’ was the worst decision I ever made,” Charlie muttered before looking to Gabriel with a small smile, “You’re actually pretty easy to talk to,” He said with a genuine smile now which lit up his whole face and made him look ten years younger, it was astonishing, the change. Gabriel smiled as well, he could tell Charlie ached for someone to talk to, to hang out with that wasn’t his brother and his kid, or even a woman.

Gabriel watched as the smile then faded and he watched as the youthful look did as well… He turned back to his drink as another man came in, one around Charlie’s age with a clear lack of good looks too…

“Thanks, I don’t get that a lot,” Gabriel said as he took a drink of his whiskey before just getting the whole bottle from the bartender and pouring himself some more.

“Come on, Charlie, come back home,” The man said right as Charlie opened his mouth to say something to Gabriel when Charlie turned and then glared at who Gabriel could only now assume is Alan.

“Alan…” Charlie growled with a slur to his voice but Alan just grabbed Charlie’s arm.

“Come on, I need you to watch my idiot son and that man was only faking interest,” He said as he dragged a helpless looking Charlie out of the bar, leaving Gabriel to be angry and drink the rest of the bottle to himself.

Gabriel was there for a few more hours before deciding to ask the bartender where Charlie lives.

“Ah, well he lives on the beach,” She says as she grabs a strip of paper and writes down Charlie’s address and slides the paper to Gabriel, “You really seemed to take a shine to him, I’m surprised he talked to you too…He only usually talks to girls. He’s a lonely one though…” She said as Gabriel took the papers and let his hand brush against hers and she smiled softly at him.

“I know, that’s why I wanted his number. That and I want to kick his brother’s ass,” He says with a sly smile as he gets up, “Take care,” He says with a smile and she smiles back even as he leaves the bar. He wandered into a downtown liquor store and looks around and he scoffs at the selection they had even as he leaves and conjures up some clear bottles of mead, his favorite type of mead that was a mix of honey and the best type of liquor along with several other ingredients that he himself added in and mixed with it so now it tasted like liquid sunshine, it was delicious.

He smirked and then a whisper of wings later he was standing on Charlie’s doorsteps in a different shirt, a white dress shirt but that was all really. He had the bottles in a cloth bag as he rang the doorbell and it was opened by Charlie, who blinked in surprise.

“You stalking me?” He asked with a somewhat amused grin as he let Gabriel in.

“Naw, I just wanted to keep drinking with you,” Gabriel said with a smile as he walked in and looked around the place and he smiled.

“Nice place you got,” He said as he sat down on the couch near the door as Charlie closed the door, “wish I had a place like this, man the chicks would be in and out like it was a bus station,” He said with a laugh as Charlie sat down next to him.

“There was a time it was like that here,” Charlie said as Gabriel reached into his cloth bag and pulled out the four bottles of mead and set them on the table. Charlie’s eyes widened when he saw the bottles even as Alan came in from the kitchen.

“I thought I heard the door…” He said before pausing and seeing Gabriel and Charlie together and Charlie’s expression as he looked up to Alan.

“Hey Alan? Come here,” Charlie said and Alan tentatively came to where Charlie sat as he pulled out his wallet.

“Yeah?” Alan asked as Gabriel scowled at Alan who was definitely nervous under the gaze.

“Get lost,” He said as he gave Alan several hundred dollars and then glared at him. Alan sighed and nodded,
“And take the dumbass with you,” Charlie growled and within ten minutes Jake Harper was whining like a bitch as he and his father left.

“Now you see why I like to drink at that bar…” Charlie muttered, “Hold on a sec and I’ll get us some glasses and then we can let this party start,” Charlie said with a smile before getting up and going to the kitchen and Gabriel flexed his left hand a bit…That urge, that desperate urge to fix Charlie was sooo much stronger than before and he didn’t understand it… He hadn’t had an urge to do something like this in thousands of years, when his Dad had still been in Heaven…

That’s when Gabriel laughed at the way he’d met Charlie and how the human had seemed so much like him…and well his dad did like to stick him with people worse off…
Charlie came back with the glasses and set them down on the table.

“So, what kind of drink is this?” Charlie asked as Gabriel just smiled and wiggled his eyebrows.

“An awesome one if I do say so myself. A friend of mine makes it and sells it in a few places, but it’s expensive…Though I’ll tell you this, he taught me how to make it and he tells me that I can put him out of business,” Gabriel says happily as he pours them both generous amounts and Charlie shrugs and drinks down half of his glass and his eyes widen as he downs the rest and licks his lips.

“Damn! That…that’s amazing!” He said in shock before he poured himself some more and Gabriel smiled as he took a drink of his own glass full of mead. He closes his eyes and finds himself letting out a content sigh even as he notices Charlie was more than enjoying the drink. Charlie had single handedly finished off the first two glass bottles of the mead before Gabriel stopped him, there was a higher amount of alcohol in this mix than the United state would ever allow and Charlie…well he was definitely drunk as he looked at Gabriel with pleading, fuzzy eyes that revealed his loneliness…

“Th…thank you Gabriel…for commin over here…” Charlie muttered and Gabriel smiled before taking his hand away from the mead which Charlie takes and downs the third bottle and he looks at the last one then Gabriel then grins in a loopy manner and leans into Gabriel and grins up at him. Gabriel smiled down at Charlie who seemed to succumb to a slow unconsciousness.

“’m so lonely nowadays…’m grrrlfriend Chelsea dumped me…n before that…Mmmia dumped me…’N before tha’ I was jusss a…an emmmpty perrrson…” He slurred. Charlie…He looked so vulnerable and sad. Gabriel pulled Charlie close and Charlie settled in Gabriel’s warm embrace.

“You’re…not gay…are you?” Charlie muttered and Gabriel laughed.

“Nope, I’m straight, just go to sleep Charlie, you’ll be fine, I promise,” Gabriel said as his wings twitched and there was a soft rustle of feathers as Gabriel laid back and let out a hum of contentment even as Charlie slipped into unconsciousness. He lifted Charlie carefully and took him upstairs and to the bedroom up there and he set Gabriel down on the bed carefully. He wasn’t aware of Rose or the camera she’s set up in Charlie’s room.

No, all Gabriel cared about was fixing Charlie. Gabriel took in a breath and closed his eyes as his grace reached out and wrapped around Charlie’s soul, the man letting out a pained gasp as Gabriel put a hand to Charlie’s chest and Gabriel’s wings shifted and manifested, six wings, all of which were a pure gold color as Gabriel tried to make sure this would be as painless as possible for Charlie as Gabriel closed his eyes and worked on repairing Charlie’s soul…to give him a second chance to be truly happy….He watched as he grace poked and wrapped around Charlie’s soul and as the light of it grew brighter under his care, but Charlie was in pain and Gabriel put his other hand to Charlie’s chest as well and hushed him softly, doing his best to extinguish the pain.

“Hold on…I’m almost done…” He muttered as he really was almost done and then he pulled his hands away. His wings shifted as moved and then the huge things stretched out and he rolled his shoulders before making them vanish as he got up and left the room and went down and got the last bottle of mead and put it on the kitchen table and then looked around and snapped up some more along with quite a bit of candy, and a bunch of cake and assortments of food. He put the cakes in the fridge and left a note for Charlie on the table and then a snap of fingers later, Gabriel was gone…

The next morning Charlie woke up feeling like his whole damn body ached…What the hell had he done last night? He got up and groaned as he realized he was in his room…Last thing he remembered was this Gabriel guy saying he wasn’t gay after like…half hugging Charlie to him… Charlie shrugged and went into his bathroom and soaked in his tub for a while which helped soothe his aching limbs before he got out and dressed and went downstairs, it was a routine really and he saw Alan and Jake were back and looking at a pile of stuff on the table.

“Uh…you guys brought me stuff?” Charlie asked with a raised brow and Alan shook his head.

“Nope, your pal left it for you last night apparently. Jake already found the cake…” And Alan jerked his head toward Jake, who was single handedly eating a chocolate cake. Charlie rolled his eyes and grimace.

“Damn…feel like I was thrown off a cliff…” Charlie muttered as he took the note left with the stuff and he noticed the bottles of that awesome liquor there and he grinned and then read the note.

Hey Charlie,
I know you liked the drinks I brought over so I stopped by my place and came back and left some for you and from what I hear your nephew loves food so there’s a cake for him in the fridge and some candy and other sweets for you and Alan. It was great getting to meet you, unfortunately my line of work keeps me moving around so I’m sorry I couldn’t stay longer
~Gabriel

Charlie chuckled and shook his head. So much for that guy…seemed like he would have been an awesome friend… He then paused as he moved his thumb and saw Gabriel’s cell number and he smiled and tucked the note into his pocket. He looked up to see Alan looking at him in shock.

“What?” Charlie asked and Alan shook his head and laughed.

“I haven’t seen you smile like that since we were kids. What’s up?” Alan asked and Charlie shrugged.

“I don’t know, I’m just…happy I guess, happier than I’ve been in a long time,” He said as he went and got his coffee as Rose came in through the back.

“Charlie! I have to show you something,” She said, she was holding a tape and Charlie shrugged.

“Alright,” He said and that got yet another look from Alan, though also from Rose.

“What?” He asked, He really must have gotten a good night’s sleep besides that weird ache… Rose just shook her head and went and put the tape into the vcr and Charlie went and sat down on the couch as a shot of his room came into view and he blinked as it looked empty at first.

“Rose…Why do you have a camera in my room?” He asked as he looked to her and she smiled feebly.

“To keep an eye on you, silly! Anyway watch!” She said as there was movement on the screen and Gabriel had come in holding Charlie and set him on the bed. The watched as Gabriel closed his eyes and took in a breath right as the camera flickered and then they heard a pained gasp from Charlie on the bed. Then…THEN they saw Gabriel put a hand to Charlie’s chest and Charlie blinked at that even as the camera flickered again and six huge gold wings unfolded from Gabriel’s back and Charlie felt his jaw drop.

“Holy crap!” Alan yelped, his exclamation was followed by Jake saying, “Huh…No wonder this cake tastes so awesome.”

They watched as Gabriel seemed to get a glow to him and the screen flicked again as he muttered something and they looked to Rose.

“Can you amplify that?” Alan asked and she nodded. She amplified it as Gabriel shifted the huge wings.

“Hold on…I’m almost done…”

The saw he brought his hand away almost a minute later. Then the wings vanished and they saw Gabriel look around the room before leaving. That’s when Rose turned off the tape.

“I think he’s behind your behavior today…He did something to you from the looks of it,” Alan said as they were all looking at Charlie now and Berta had come in quietly and seen this.

“Guess we can’t deny there isn’t a God now…Damn Charlie you got all the good things happening to you,” Berta says as she puts down some cleaning supplies.

Charlie shrugged and got up and left them to think. Him? Well once he thought about it…yeah he felt different, but not in a bad way…No instead of that empty hole he used to feel…he felt contentment and happiness. He couldn’t help but smile. He’d used to feel just dead inside but now…Well he guessed Gabriel had given him a chance at what he wasn’t sure, but he was just…happy now and he guessed he should think more about his destructive habits.
--
Gabriel smirked as he left the place, he’d been there watching and he smiled when he saw Charlie realizing he’d been given a second chance… Finally Gabriel had done one of his duties in a looong time and it…it felt good.
